A branch from a tree
curves out
and grows back into the trunk
So my heart
branches out into the open air
but I keep is close
so that all the sides don't ever leave me
I once let my branches
reach out into the air
Only to find that the wind had stopped
You said you wanted a tree
more beautiful than I
One so intricate
that it seemed flawless
But what you didn't see
was the inside
the bark that twists and turns
in the most intricate way
Instead you place your idea
of what a tree should be on me
Blinding you to the truth
of all trees
They all twist
and they all turn
All are beautiful in their own way
Not one more perfect than the next
But you didn't see that
And I put all of my branches
where you could see
And found myself suffocating
In the lack of air.
Because you left, wind
and i'm left here
I will die without you
or until the next wind comes
and recognizes me for what I am
And lets my branches flourish
out in the open
growing leaves and fruit and flowers
more beautiful than you've ever seen
But until then
I keep my branches close
so that all the ends don't ever leave me.
Where I am safe
in myself.
